If you grew up raiding toy aisles in the late ’80s, the Python Patrol Viper holds a special place in your heart, and maybe a dusty shelf in your childhood bedroom. But how does this stealthy Cobra trooper stack up across his various incarnations? Let’s break it down, referencing previous releases to this yet-to-drop offering –
The Original (1989, 3¾-inch RAH)
The 3¾-inch Python Patrol Cobra Viper was first released in 1989 as a repaint of the original Viper from 1986, and the Python Viper’s body was made directly from that 1986 Viper mold. The grey, black, and yellow color scheme with the signature crosshatch “pythonization” pattern was immediately iconic, a trooper that looked dangerous and different from standard Cobra blue. For kids at the time, this was a must-have army builder.
The 2003 Spy Troops 6-Pack (3¾-inch)
The Python Patrol name got a revival in the early 2000s with a Toys R Us exclusive multi-pack. The results were mixed. The 6-pack was notable for its ambition, even if not every figure in it landed equally.
The Classified Series (6-inch, 2022 — Target Exclusive)
This is the version most collectors are talking about today. The Python Patrol Cobra Viper in the Classified Series does a superb job of capturing the look and feel of the vintage toy while also subtly updating elements of his outfit and gear, now donning an outfit in shades of grey and black with yellow highlights. The pythonization crosshatch detail on the sleeves is a nice nod to the original.
That said, it’s not without flaws. The yellow paint used on the shoulder strap looks gloppy, and the figure has fewer accessories than previous releases — notably missing the bandanna that earlier Classified Vipers included.
Compared to the standard Cobra Island Viper (2021) and the Viper Officer 3-pack, the Classified Python Patrol Viper is truer to the original RAH colors than even the standard Classified Viper was, which is a genuine plus for vintage fans. The light grey crosshatch pythonization effect on the sleeves reads well, though it would have been even better to see that pattern carried across the torso.
How Does It Compare Overall?
The 1989 original wins on nostalgia. The 2022 Classified version wins on articulation and scale. The Cobra Viper mold has been the basis for a handful of Classified variants, the Cobra Viper Officer and Vipers set, the Python Patrol version, and the Crimson Viper, making it one of the most-reused and most-loved sculpts in the modern line.
If you’re an army builder, the Python Patrol Viper is a compelling squad addition, especially since the early Python Patrol figures hit Target clearance quickly, making it possible to grab this figure for well under $10, a hard price to argue with for a quality Classified figure.
Bottom Line: The G.I. Joe Python Patrol Viper has earned its legendary status across nearly four decades of releases. The 2022 Classified version isn’t perfect, watch for sloppy yellow paint apps, but as a tribute to one of G.I. Joe’s coolest sub-factions, it absolutely delivers. Whether you’re a die-hard RAH collector or jumping into Classified for the first time, this is one Cobra trooper worth deploying.
