The Python Patrol Trooper is an elite special operations member of the Cobra forces, tasked with infiltration, sabotage, and specialized combat missions. Stealthy in movement and lethal in tactics, they stand as one of the most feared threats the G.I.Joe team must face.

This brand new EXQUISITE MINI Series G.I.Joe Python Patrol Trooper action figure stands at 11CM tall. Reimagined from the classic G.I.Joe Python Patrol design, he wears a multi-functional camouflage uniform in bright yellow with black striping, paired with silver-gray metallic chest armor. Helmet, mask, and red Cobra emblems on chest are all meticulously sculpted, reinforcing his identity as an elite Cobra operative.

Python Patrol has been a constant in the G.I.Joe series since 1989, with o-ring, modern and classified releases making their way into collections across the fandom. I think it’s safe to say that for Hiya Collectors, this is must have troop builder.

If you’ve been collecting G.I. Joe figures across any era, you already know that Python Patrol holds a special place in the fandom. The striking green, yellow, black, and gray camouflage pattern that debuted in 1989 is one of the most visually distinctive repaints Hasbro ever produced, and now Hiya Toys has brought that iconic look to their fast-growing Exquisite Mini 1:18 scale line with the Python Patrol Cobra Trooper. The question isn’t whether you want this figure. The question is whether it’s actually worth adding to your shelf alongside everything else in your collection.

Spoiler: it absolutely is. But let’s dig into why.

A Quick Word on the Python Patrol Legacy

Before we talk about the figure itself, some context is helpful for those newer to the hobby. Python Patrol was first introduced in 1989 as a subset of the vintage G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero toyline. It consisted of six repainted Cobra figures dressed in a distinctive camouflage scheme meant to evoke the scales of a python, lots of green and yellow with geometric diamond patterns layered over gray. Three vehicles were released alongside them in a red and black crosshatch pattern that referenced real python coloring even more directly.

The Python Patrol Cobra Trooper (and his officer counterpart) were repaints of the original 1982 Cobra figures, which means they carried a certain nostalgic weight even when they were new. They weren’t just soldiers, they were elite soldiers, implying that the python camo represented a step up in Cobra’s hierarchy.

That legacy carried into the modern era when Hasbro revisited Python Patrol in their 6-inch G.I. Joe Classified Series, releasing a Python Patrol Officer as a Target exclusive alongside figures like the Python Patrol Cobra Viper and Vypra. Those 6-inch figures were well-received, though collectors noted they were largely repaints with updated deco — smart, but not revolutionary.

Now Hiya Toys is tackling the same territory in their Exquisite Mini 1:18 scale line, and the result is genuinely impressive for reasons that go beyond just slapping a new paint job on an existing mold.

First Impressions

Hiya Toys continues to evolve, and the Python Patrol Cobra Trooper is no exception. The Python Patrol color motif carries through, don’t be surprised if you leave it in-package just for the shelf display.

Although I don’t have this figure in hand yet, I’m sure that the figure itself lands in your hand with a weight and density that’s reassuring. This is a premium collectible, not a dollar-bin army builder. That said, Hiya has been transparent about their philosophy: these are pose and display figures, not toys meant to be tossed around a sandbox. If you’re building a diorama shelf or a Cobra armory display, that’s exactly the right mindset.

Sculpt and Paint: Where Hiya Earns Its Reputation

At 105mm tall, this figure hits that sweet spot for 1:18 collectors — compatible with classic vintage figures and modern offerings like the Pursuit of Cobra line, while offering a level of sculpt detail that those older lines simply couldn’t achieve at the price point.

The Python Patrol deco is the star of the show here. The distinctive diamond-scale python pattern is applied with a precision that would have been unthinkable on a mass market 3.75″ figure two decades ago. The overlapping geometric shapes that give the pattern its “snake scale” look are cleanly rendered with no bleeding or muddy transitions, and the color balance between the greens, yellows, and grays feels true to the vintage source while carrying enough modern refinement to look at home next to Hiya’s other recent offerings.

The Cobra emblem on the chest is crisp and well-centered; A small detail that matters enormously to collectors who have been burned by crooked tampo prints on lesser figures. The “Y” shaped armor vest and arm guards carry their own paint detailing that adds depth to what could have otherwise been a flat-looking piece.

The head sculpt beneath the iconic Cobra trooper helmet projects that anonymous, slightly menacing energy the character is known for. These guys are supposed to be faceless enforcers, and the sculpt nails that feeling while still giving you enough detail to justify the premium price.

Articulation: 19 Points of Fun (With Some Caveats)

With 19 points of articulation, the Python Patrol Cobra Trooper is genuinely poseable in ways that vintage 3.75″ figures could only dream of. You get meaningful range at the elbows and knees, a decent waist rotation, and enough shoulder mobility to get convincing two-handed weapon poses. For a figure at this scale and price point, it’s an impressive package.

That said, returning collectors should calibrate their expectations appropriately. Hiya’s engineering is excellent for 1:18, but it’s not going to match the butterfly pec joints and double-hinged knees of Hasbro’s 6-inch Classified Series figures. The joints can also feel slightly stiff right out of the box, so make sure to warm them gently before pushing the range of motion to avoid any stress on the plastic.

The back of the combat suit includes hooks for weapons storage, and a leg holster for the included pistol keeps the figure looking armed and ready even when you’re not actively posing it. These are the kinds of thoughtful design touches that separate Hiya’s work from cheaper competitors in the 1:18 space.

Accessories: Well Stocked for Troop Building

The Python Patrol Cobra Trooper ships with a generous accessories package that includes interchangeable hands, an SMG, a rifle, two pistols, a dagger, and a display base. Everything is scaled appropriately and cast in plastic that holds the python-themed paint apps cleanly.

For collectors who are army building, and if Python Patrol has ever appealed to you, you will want multiples, the interchangeable hands are a key feature. Different hand positions let you create visual variety across a squad of troopers without the figures looking copy-pasted. That’s smart design.

The display base is a nice touch, stamped with the Cobra logo and cast to complement the figure’s footprint. It’s not mandatory, but for shelf displays it adds a finished look that bare feet on a shelf just can’t replicate.

Scale Comparison: How Does It Stack Up?

This is where things get genuinely interesting for collectors who span multiple eras.

Versus the Vintage 1989 3.75″ Python Patrol Trooper: The Hiya figure is significantly more detailed and articulated. The original vintage figure was a simple repaint with five points of articulation and limited accessories. What it had going for it was charm, nostalgia, and the ability to stand alongside the original Python Patrol vehicles. The Hiya figure wins on every technical metric, though the vintage figure’s simplicity has its own appeal for display purposes.

Versus Hasbro’s Pursuit of Cobra / 30th Anniversary Era 3.75″ Figures: The Hiya figure competes favorably and, in some respects, surpasses these releases. The Pursuit of Cobra era pushed 1:18 articulation further than it had ever gone, with figures that could achieve genuinely dynamic action poses. Hiya’s trooper matches that articulation range while delivering paint apps and sculpt detail that the mass-market POC line couldn’t justify at retail price. If you’re a 1:18 purist, Hiya is essentially picking up where the best of that era left off.

Versus Hasbro’s 6-inch Classified Series Python Patrol Officer and Viper: This is the most debated comparison in the collector community right now. The Classified figures offer a larger canvas for sculpt detail, superior articulation engineering, and easier retail availability. However, the Hiya figure in Python Patrol deco benefits enormously from the 1:18 scale when it comes to troop building. You can fit four Hiya troopers in the same shelf space as two Classified figures, and at roughly the same price-per-figure, the math for army builders starts to tip in Hiya’s favor. The Classified Python Patrol Officer is a fantastic figure — but building a full Python Patrol squad at 6 inches gets expensive fast.

Versus Other Current 1:18 Scale Options: The short answer is that no one else is currently doing what Hiya is doing in this scale. Super7’s ReAction figures are deliberately retro and limited in articulation. The vintage o-ring figures remain beloved but are a different category. Hiya has essentially created their own lane: premium 1:18 scale G.I. Joe with modern sculpt standards and an expanding roster that keeps growing.

Who Is This Figure For?

If you’re a 1:18 scale purist who never made the jump to Classified and has no intention of doing so, this figure was made for you. It respects the scale while delivering quality that would have seemed impossible when you were a kid buying o-ring figures off the pegs at Kmart.

If you’re a multi-scale collector who appreciates both the Classified Series and the 1:18 format — the Python Patrol Cobra Trooper fills a gap that Hasbro isn’t currently addressing. It lets you build out a Python Patrol detachment in the scale that most of your vintage vehicles and playsets were designed for.

If you’re an army builder, buy multiples now. Hiya’s figures have demonstrated a pattern of selling out quickly, and troop builders like this one tend to be the hardest to find at retail after the initial wave clears.

Final Verdict

From initial pictures, the Hiya Toys Exquisite Mini Python Patrol Cobra Trooper is a figure that punches well above its weight class. The python pattern deco is rendered with real care, the sculpt carries genuine character, the accessory loadout is thoughtful, and the 19-point articulation delivers enough posing options to keep a display feeling dynamic. Compared to the vintage 1989 original it’s a quantum leap forward; compared to the modern Classified Series Python Patrol releases it’s a different but equally compelling proposition; and compared to anything else in the current 1:18 market, it simply has no serious competition.

At approximately $24.99, it’s not an impulse buy, but it is an honest value for what you’re getting. Hiya Toys has been building something genuinely special with the Exquisite Mini G.I. Joe line, and the Python Patrol Cobra Trooper is one of its most compelling entries yet.

Rating: 9/10

Deductions for occasional joint stiffness out of the box and the specialized retail availability that makes these harder to find than a casual collector might hope. Everything else appears to be exactly what it should be.
