With no restrictions on experimentation and no lack of volunteers Dr. Mindbender and Professor Rottclaw have improved upon Cobra’s past attempts to create a squadron of amphibious commandoes able to breath both air and water. Hydro-Vipers are qualified Cobra Eels (Combat Divers) surgically altered to withstand nitrogen narcosis and other side effects of deep diving, making them elite underwater troopers. Synthetic webs are implanted between their fingers and subcutaneous fat production is stimulated by chemical injections to provide natural insulation. Despite the successful conversion process, the long-term effect of these procedures is known to be psychologically destabilizing.

There you have it, my friends. What an awesome looking figure, albeit slight issues and all. If you’re a G.I. Joe collector, the Cobra Hydro-Viper is one of those figures that just hits differently. Originally released in 1988, the vintage Hydro-Viper came loaded with accessories: a regulator helmet, fathom fins, a scuba pack, a harpoon gun, a dagger, air hoses, and even a black Devil Ray, making it one of the most accessory-rich figures of its era.

What makes this character so compelling is the lore behind it. Hydro-Vipers are qualified Cobra Eels (frogmen) who volunteer to be surgically altered to withstand nitrogen narcosis and the other brutal effects of deep diving. That backstory alone gives the figure a sinister edge that casual army builders simply don’t have.

The classic design is iconic. The devil-like helmet is a surprisingly well-executed topper, and the backpack is huge, featuring detailed gauges and dials that add real contrast to the bright-colored figure. One standout detail is the webbed left hand, a rare move for G.I. Joe figures, making it one of the few in the line that didn’t use a standard arm mold.

Now, that Hasbro has brought back the Hydro-Viper into the G.I. Joe Classified Series as a 6″ figure, priced at $27.99, featuring a wickedly updated helmet, flippers, and the classic Devil Ray sidekick, it’ll be hard for many to say no to one, let alone multiples of this figure.

Whether you’re chasing the vintage original or pre-ordering the Classified upgrade, the Hydro-Viper earns its place in any Cobra collection. It’s a unique, well-themed figure with genuine character and that’s rare.
