Classified Dossier
Code Name: Airtight
File Name: Schnurr, Kurt
Primary Specialty: CBR (Chemical, Biological, and Radiological Warfare)
Secondary Specialty: Ordnance
Birthplace: New Haven, CT
Kurt was the kid who could hold his breath the longest. He was also the kid who had the largest collection of plastic dinosaurs on the block. He was a weird kid who grew up to be an even stranger adult. It takes a mighty weird person to walk into a cloud of toxic gas strong enough to fell a mutant weight-lifter cockroach wearing a protective suit built under contract for the government by the lowest bidder.
“Airtight is an unreformed practical joker; sneezing powder, plastic barf, whoopee cushion—the whole bit! No prank is too low for him. You’d think the other Joes would hate his guts, but they don’t. Because when the bad guys escalate the fire fight and start playing dirty, it’s old Airtight who suits up and wades into the thick of it.”
If you grew up in the ’80s with a toy box full of 3¾-inch soldiers, Airtight was probably one of the figures you’d keep separate from the rest; Not because he was unpopular, but because he just looked different. Dressed head-to-toe in a bright yellow hazmat suit with a distinctive green visor, Airtight stood out on any shelf or battlefield diorama. His real name is Kurt Schnurr, and his specialty as G.I. Joe’s Chemical Warfare specialist gave him a niche that no other figure in the line really filled at the time.
The figure itself holds up remarkably well for its era. It’s awesome to see him in the Classified range, as not only does he help fill that 1985 gap that his absence caused, but it makes sense from a storyline perspective to introduce him, now that dark energon is “a thing.”
From a collector’s standpoint, finding a complete Airtight today with all accessories intact takes some patience. The neutralizer gun is a common missing piece, and the visor can yellow over time, but a clean, complete example is a satisfying addition to any vintage Joe collection. He was also re-used enough in the Marvel comics run to feel like a legitimate member of the team rather than a background figure. Hopefully that translates into the Classified line.
On that note, many thanks as always go to Adam for the review! Will you be adding Airtight to your collection? Let me know in the comments below!
