For those wondering about the typo in his name, check this out –

“Psych is a verb or slang interjection, meaning to trick (“I was just psyched out!”) or to prepare mentally (“to psych up”). It is also short for psychology or psychiatry. Psyche (pronounced sahy-kee) is a noun referring to the human mind, soul, or spirit.”

If you grew up tearing open G.I. Joe cardboard in the late ’80s, there’s a good chance Night Force Psyche-Out snuck into your collection at some point, probably paired with Tunnel Rat, wrapped in that glow-in-the-dark black paint job that made the whole Night Force sub-line feel like a secret operation you weren’t supposed to know about. Decades later, Hasbro is bringing him back, and longtime fans have noticed something fun: the character’s name has picked up a slightly different spelling along the way.

Who Is Psyche-Out, Anyway?

Before he was a Night Force operative, Psyche-Out was just Psyche-Out, full name Kenneth D. Rich, a psychology grad from Berkeley with a knack for getting inside people’s heads, sometimes literally. His official specialty is Psy-Ops, and his file describes work involving the inducement of paranoia by means of low frequency radio waves, which is about as delightfully over-the-top as G.I. Joe bios get. He first showed up in the toy line in 1987, then crossed the Atlantic in a repainted UK/European release as Tiger Force Psyche-Out.

Psyche-Out’s Night Force debut came a year later, in 1988, as part of a Toys R Us exclusive Night Force two-pack with Tunnel Rat. The figure reused his original 1987 sculpt but swapped the colors for Night Force’s signature stealthy black-and-silver look, and came loaded with gear: a black backpack, a silver communications piece for the back of his head, a black handgun, a black box with a radar dish, and two radar dishes that snapped onto his wrists. It’s a weird, wonderful little arsenal that fit the character’s psychological-warfare gimmick perfectly.

He’d resurface again years later for collectors, most notably in the 2013 G.I. Joe Collectors’ Club convention exclusive box set Night Force – Nocturnal Fire, a deep-cut release that reminded fans just how beloved this corner of the Joe universe still was.

Fast forward to 2026, and Hasbro’s modern G.I. Joe Classified Series is giving the character a full 6-inch makeover, but this time, he’s credited as Night Force Psych-Out, dropping the “e” from his classic name. It’s a small tweak, but it’s the kind of detail collectors love to spot and debate. The new figure, officially #215 in the Classified Series sequence, leans into the character’s rich vintage history while updating him for a modern shelf. It ships with eight character-inspired accessory pieces, including an NF-88 Psionic Disruptor Rifle with a removable blast effect, a Psychic Resonator Pack with two blast effects, a knife, and a Psionic shield that plugs into his wrist.

Visually, the new version keeps the moody Night Force palette while adding some fresh flair: the figure’s gray and black tactical top features pink circular emitters on the chest plate, paired with olive green pants and black kneepads, a design that nods to the original without just recoloring the same old mold.

This Classified release was first spotted as a Walmart Collector Con exclusive listing under a coded placeholder name before the reveal, which is pretty standard practice for these retailer-exclusive drops. It’s since been confirmed and shown off at SDCC 2026, giving fans their clearest look yet at how far the character has come since 1988.

Night Force has always punched above its weight in the G.I. Joe fandom. The sub-line’s stealth-mission aesthetic and limited original releases made pieces like Psyche-Out surprisingly hard to find in the secondary market for years. A modern, widely available Classified Series version, even with its slightly tweaked spelling, gives fans a chance to finally get a proper, poseable take on a character who’s mostly lived on in convention exclusives and vintage listings.

Whether you call him Psyche-Out or Psych-Out, the mission’s the same: get inside Cobra’s head before Cobra gets inside yours.
