Some figures get announced and fans shrug. This one didn’t. When Hasbro unveiled the hooded Cobra Commander for the G.I. Joe Classified Series, the reaction across the collector community was less “cool, another Cobra Commander” and more “it’s finally happening.” After nearly two hundred figures in this modern line, Cobra’s leader is getting the one look fans have been asking for since day one, and it comes with a throne to match his ego.

To understand why this release matters, it helps to know where the hood came from in the first place. The design wasn’t a toy-first idea; these hooded designs first appeared in the Marvel Comics run written by Larry Hama, featuring a more relaxed helmet for use at Cobra’s secret headquarters or during meetings. It gave Cobra Commander a softer, almost regal silhouette compared to his chrome battle mask, and it stuck with fans immediately.

Hasbro turned that comic-page look into an actual toy in 1984, but not through normal retail channels. The original vintage Hooded Cobra Commander was a mail-away exclusive: kids clipped Flag Points from G.I. Joe packaging and mailed them in, and Hooded Cobra Commander was available mail-order between 1984 and 1990, later returning as the mystery figure included with the Collector’s Kit in 1992 and 1993 before the vintage line ended entirely. It never got a proper cardback release until the 25th Anniversary line, which only added to its mystique. The look became even more legendary in 1984 with a mail-away exclusive figure that required fans to collect and redeem Flag Points from G.I. Joe packaging, and it’s remained one of the most requested vintage looks ever since, the version of Cobra Commander with the Cobra-branded hood over his head has been wanted by fans since the Classified line first started.

Officially, this is G.I. Joe Classified Series figure #221, and Hasbro’s marketing name for it is Cobra Commander (Dress Uniform and Throne), though plenty of retailers and fan sites have taken to calling it “Hooded Cobra Commander” instead, a nickname that’s stuck harder than the official title in a lot of preorder threads and forum discussions.

As for the figure itself, this is a genuinely loaded release. It ships as a deluxe set featuring character-inspired accessory pieces including a staff, knife, 4 alternate hands for striking villainous poses, a snake-coiled globe, a weapon accessory, and a massive snake hood throne, on top of a removable crown and a soft-goods cape. That cape isn’t a throwaway plastic sculpt either, it has real fabric weight to it, draping all the way to the ground with a deep red interior and a gold shoulder cord securing it at the collar.

The throne is really the star of the show here. The helmet has a clean sculpt with the faceplate’s horizontal ridges sharply defined, and the gold crown piece sits flush against the red hood beneath it, while the seat itself carries the same snake motifs found throughout the set, a small cobra-headed scepter rests against one of the throne’s armrests, its sculpted snake head matching the larger serpent motifs carved into the seat.

This one is positioned as a premium release, not a mainline impulse-buy figure. Pre-orders for Cobra Commander are live on Hasbro Pulse now for $69.99 ahead of a December 2026. That price tag reflects the scale of the set, you’re not just getting a figure, you’re getting a full display piece with a character-defining throne attached.

It’s also worth noting how rare this exact aesthetic has been in plastic form. While the hood was commonly seen in both the comics and animated series, it largely disappeared from modern toy lines for years (again, until the 25th Anniversary line), which makes its return here feel less like a routine repaint and more like Hasbro finally checking off the line’s most requested box.

For a character who’s already had chrome masks, battle armor takes, and even a snake-mutation figure in this line, the hooded dress uniform version fills a gap that’s been open since the Classified Series began. Between the sculpted throne, the fabric cape, and the sheer accessory count, this is clearly built to be a display centerpiece rather than just another rotation figure on the shelf. Whether you call it Cobra Commander #221 or just “the hooded one,” it’s shaping up to be one of the most significant releases the line has produced.
