Dusty was working as a refrigerator repairman and studying desert ecology at night when his pre-enlistment application for the G.I. Joe Team was approved. Quick take: Dusty v3, the desert trooper packaged with his coyote companion, Sandstorm, is one of the most beloved G.I. Joe figures of the vintage era, and Hasbro’s newly revealed G.I. Joe Classified Series Dusty & Coyote Sandstorm 2-pack finally gives the character a modern, highly articulated update. Here’s how the two stack up.
Note: collectors sometimes see this figure filed under “1993,” but Dusty & Sandstorm (v3) actually debuted in 1991 as part of the vintage line’s Series Ten, and was pulled from U.S. shelves the following year.
The Original 1991 Dusty v3
Dusty v3 stood out from earlier Dusty releases because he was paired with Sandstorm, a gray coyote sidekick, a first for the character. The set included a brown submachine gun with a removable, extendable stock, a brown pistol, and a brown backpack. The figure’s body was an entirely original sculpt (not recycled from another release), which is part of why it’s held in high regard by vintage collectors. Ironically, that same mold went on to get reused for later Dusty figures in 2000 and 2002.
Why it still matters: the combination of a unique sculpt and a genuinely fun accessory (a loyal animal companion is rare in the vintage line) makes v3 a standout on the secondary market, where clean carded copies command solid prices from Joe collectors.
The New G.I. Joe Classified Series Dusty & Coyote Sandstorm
As part of Hasbro’s “Yo Joe June” 2026 reveal wave, the G.I. Joe Classified Series brought Dusty back, again paired with Coyote Sandstorm, as a modern 6-inch-scale 2-pack. Highlights of the new release:
- 9 character-inspired accessories, expanding well beyond the original’s three-piece loadout
- A classic Dusty & Coyote Sandstorm-inspired design that translates the desert-trooper look into the more heavily articulated Classified Series body style
- Premium detailing and high poseability, in line with the rest of the modern line

If you grew up with the original, the vintage v3 is worth tracking down purely for nostalgia and its distinctive sculpt. If you want a Dusty that poses dynamically on a shelf next to the rest of your modern Joe roster, the Classified Series 2-pack is the clear upgrade, it keeps the Sandstorm pairing that made the original special while modernizing everything else.
Bottom Line
Dusty v3 proves a good character concept holds up: the desert-trooper-and-coyote pairing was memorable enough in 1991 to get a direct spiritual successor 35 years later. Vintage collectors should hold onto (or hunt down) the original for its history and rarity; new-line collectors will get more play value and shelf presence out of the 2026 Classified Series release.
