The latest wave of G.I.Joe Classified Series offerings has dropped overseas, with Adam aka @sharkys_pix and Bobby Bee of @beesbattlegrounds bringing us a 1-2 punch of reviews.

The Toxo-Viper has never had a huge amount of lore, but that’s exactly what makes this release interesting. Rather than being another standard Cobra infantry soldier, the Toxo-Viper represents Cobra’s hazardous materials division—the unfortunate troopers tasked with handling toxic waste, chemical spills and dangerous compounds. Could this really be the worst assignment in the entire Cobra organisation?

The Toxo-Viper is Cobra’s toxic waste guy (aka Leaky Suite Brigade), the trooper who shows up to make the battlefield unbreathable so G.I. Joe has a worse day than everyone else. He’s never been an A-lister, but he’s stuck around since 1988 because the concept and look are just awesome. Now he’s finally getting a proper Classified Series figure, so here’s the rundown on all three versions.
The Basic Idea Behind the Character
The gimmick, straight from the file card, is that Toxo-Vipers get thrown into battle to make the environment as foul as possible, and their suits are only moderately airtight and solvent-resistant, because Cobra didn’t want to pay for anything better.
And it gets meaner than that. Getting assigned as a Toxo-Viper is basically a punishment inside Cobra, handed out for major offenses, and just threatening to send a guy to the “leaky suit brigade” is enough to keep other troops in line. That’s a genuinely good bit, the villain’s own gear is designed to be a liability, and it’s stuck with the character ever since.
v1 — 1988
The original came out in the seventh series of A Real American Hero. Carded in 1988, still around in ’89, gone from shelves domestically by 1990.
This was peak “we’ve stopped trying to look military” Hasbro. The head’s got an internal breathing mask that’s at least grounded in reality, but the helmet over it is just weird, and the brown/yellow/aqua/red color scheme doesn’t help. Not an accident, either, that whole era of the line was pushing away from realism, and this figure is basically the prototype for what became Eco-Warriors a few years later.
For gear he came loaded: A big brown environmental helmet with yellow, red, and blue trim, a black backpack, a black pistol, and a black air hose. If you’re hunting a complete one, watch out, the two hanging bits on the backpack snap off.
A couple of odd footnotes worth knowing: In the 1991 catalog, Hasbro mixed up the Toxo-Viper and Sludge Viper names, and earlier in development he was kicked around under names like Stinkbugs, Heavy-Breathers, and Gas-Vipers.And this one’s wild, in 1993, Hasbro and their ad agency actually paid a $175,000 FTC fine over how the “battle damage” on his card art was represented. Not many action figures come with their own FTC case.
v2 — 1991, Eco-Warriors
He came back three years later as part of Eco-Warriors. Carded in the tenth series in 1991, gone again by 1992.
Eco-Warriors was all about the gimmick, and this figure went all in. Purple gun, purple backpack, a green cannon that actually shot water; You filled it up, pushed the plunger, and it fired, plus a black stand. The color-change trick applied to the figure itself too: Spots on him were made of special plastic that shifted color when it got wet, simulating “battle damage,” same as every other Eco-Warrior.
Nice detail for anyone into the sculpting side of things, this body was entirely original, no recycled parts, though Hasbro later retooled most of it in 1992 to make the Toxo-Zombie, and reused the legs and waist again in 1994 for Major Bludd. No known variants on this one, so it’s an easy one to collect compared to some ARAH figures. The bio leaned harder into the attitude angle this time, describing Toxo-Vipers as still dealing with toxic sludge and gas, with the personality of “permanent latrine orderlies.”
Did He Ever Show Up Anywhere?
Not really. He never appeared in the ’80s Sunbow cartoon at all, the toy came out too late in the show’s run. Most of what we know is file-card lore and a scattered comic appearance or two, like the bit where a squad of Toxo-Vipers guarding the Arctic got taken down by the Joe Arctic team and the Oktober Guard. He’s a toy-first character, full stop.
Now He’s Finally Getting a Classified Series Figure
35-plus years later, he’s in the 6-inch Classified line. Hasbro dropped him during the “Yo Joe! June” 2026 Fanstream along with Iceberg, Duke, Mistress Armada, and the new character Synapse.

What he looks like: Same idea, modern execution. Deep purple hazmat suit with wrinkled, rubbery sculpted texture, teal chest armor and knee pads, the whole color scheme is built around “toxic.”
They didn’t skimp on accessories, either, which matters for an army-builder release. You get the Sludge Thrower pack with multiple hose connections, a connector tube, a Sludge Nozzle, an alternate teal masked head with a red visor, and three translucent yellow-green blast effects, one of which looks like a puddle of sludge. And they’re not just for show, the blast effects can attach to either the backpack or the blaster, so you’ve got two different ways to display him out of the box.
Packaging’s solid too: Dark navy carbon-fiber box with a window, crimson red tray insert behind the figure. Per Hasbro’s own listing, he comes with seven accessories total, full articulation, and character-specific file card art on the box.
Worth Grabbing?
If you liked the character back in ’88 or ’91, this is the update you’d want, same gross-out concept, just done with modern sculpting and a proper alt-head instead of a water gimmick. It’s a deep cut getting real effort put into it, which doesn’t always happen. And Classified preorders have a habit of drying up before release, so if you want one, don’t sit on it too long.
