Two of the biggest names in 1980s toy history are officially colliding this summer, as Playmates Toys finally dropped its long-rumored Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x G.I. Joe crossover line. Dubbed “Real Reptilian Heroes,” the collection reimagines Leonardo as Snake Eyes, Donatello as Dial-Tone, Michelangelo as Shipwreck, and Raphael as Roadblock, while Shredder, Krang, and the rest of the rogues’ gallery get a Cobra-inspired makeover as Cobra Commander, Destro, and Storm Shadow. Each 4.5″–5.25″ figure is fully articulated and packaged in retro-style window boxes designed to evoke the exact aesthetic collectors grew up with, a deliberate move that taps directly into the shared nostalgia of two properties that literally defined the toy aisle for an entire generation of ’80s and ’90s kids.
That nostalgia factor is doing a lot of heavy lifting here, and Playmates knows it. This isn’t just a novelty mashup, it’s a swan song. With Playmates set to hand the TMNT toy license over to Mattel in 2027 after nearly 40 years, this crossover functions as a victory lap, pairing the brand that built its empire on sewer-dwelling ninjas with another franchise built on the exact same “collect the whole team” model that made both toylines cultural juggernauts.
And that’s exactly why the SDCC exclusive Snake Eyes x Leonardo figure makes so much sense as the summer exclusive of the line. Leonardo is the de facto leader and most recognizable face of the Turtles, while Snake Eyes is arguably G.I. Joe’s single most iconic, best-selling character of all time. Pairing the two flagship characters, rather than a supporting player from either roster, for the convention-exclusive centerpiece isn’t a random choice; it’s the most obvious “poster figure” combination for a crossover event, guaranteeing it’ll be the most sought-after piece for collectors on both sides of the aisle.
I haven’t picked up any from the line yet, but I’m finding it harder and harder to say no.
