O:R UPDATES: Wave 1 prototypes and deco sheets, Wave 2 3D sculptures, Wave 3 packaging, and Wave 4 package paintings!

Operation: Recall Army!

Update #48 featured a 22 minute video walking through figure development: including the first two factory prototypes and 3D sculpt revisions of the next two figures, the A.T.L.A.S. and Orthrus logos (by Ron Rudat), our all-new figure and art display stands, and the latest paint masters. Please have a look when you canUpdate #49 showed off the revised figures stands and the first draft of the Wave 1 packaging. Update #50 shared the factory’s progress on finalizing Wave 1 (and I posted a video going more in depth here), showed the Wave 1 and Wave 2 packaging, Scott’s sculpting and casting, and Doug’s Wave 4 line art and paintings.

This month we’ll review (1) Wave 1 factory prototypes and (2) Wave 1 deco sheets from Big JO, (3) Wave 2 digital sculpt work by Carter!, (4) Wave 3 packaging by RCM, and (5) more Wave 4 paintings by Doug Hart.

Wave 1 factory prototypes by Big JO!

At long last, I’ve held these 3.75″ – 4″ prototypes in my hands and THEY. ARE. MARVELOUS.

The level of detail in these sculpts is just off the charts. The photos above give you a sense of the variation in scale that we are going for with Operation: Recall. The photos below give you a better look at some of the sculpt detail.

These prototypes will be ON HAND at JoeFest (Augusta GA this June 20-22) and the DFW GI Joe And Action Figure Show (Irving TX this June 27-29), alongside all 19 year one 2up paintmasters. Come see them!

Wave 1 deco sheets by Big JO

Once the hand-sculpted figures have been scanned and revised using 3D sculpting software, we have to create deco sheets based on the physical paint masters but using the actual 3D models. This task is being handled by Big JO, our awesome manufacturing mastermind and yet another former Hasbro veteran. Here’s a look at the wave 1 deco sheets:

W1F1: Breacher & Hellhound
W1F2: Dark Reapers
W1F3: Mzimu Corps v1 (different arm scars, lighter skin tone)
W1F3: Mzimu Corps v2 (different arm scars, darker skin tone)
W1F4: General Mortífero

Wave 2 digital sculpt work by Carter!

Working with Carter! has been an absolute pleasure. He attacks these projects with creativity, tenacity and professionalism. He’s yet another seasoned Hasbro veteran, and I couldn’t be happier to have his help with this line. Here’s a look at the process for revising Retelo, the figure that started Operation: Recall.

Bottom row: scans of Bill Merklein’s original hand sculpted figure. Top row: approved revised sculpt!

Above, scans of Bill Merklein’s original hand sculpted figures can be seen along the bottom row, then as you move your way up you see a couple rounds of sculpture revisions, and finally the top row is the approved 3D sculpt.

L-R: Wilson & Bear Claw, Retelo, Hellhound & Breacher, and Sol Eagle

Above, a few Wave 2 A.T.L.A.S. operatives have joined Wave 1’s Breacher and Hellhound (Homer is not pictured, he’s off delivering a message). Original hand-sculpted figures were created by Bill Merklein and Mike Good, and then revised by Carter! Next up is Bengal, our intelligence/sniper.

Wave 3 packaging by RCM

We don’t have the final Salty Dawg painting in hand yet, but here’s a rough draft mock up of his package in the meantime. We guarantee Doug will paint five fingers on every hand!

W3F1: Salty Dawg package art by Doug Hart (not final), paintmaster by Mathew LeCroy.
W3F2: Damselfly package art by Doug Hart, paintmaster in progress.
W3F3: SHHHH package art by Doug Hart, paintmaster by Ray Murphy.
W3F4: Runback & PAC-DOG package art by Doug Hart, paintmaster in progress.

Wave 4 paintings by Doug Hart

While I’ve been working on the Wave 3 packaging, Doug has been working on the Wave 4 package paintings. I’ll be picking up the remaining paintings from Doug in early June, and I hope to have prints of those as well as a set of trading cards ready for Doug to sign at JoeFest (Augusta GA this June 20-22). Come see us!

In addition to all of this Year One progress, we’ve kicked off Year Two figure development! Ron Rudat and Mark Pennington are each developing additional figures for the line, and we plan to show some of that work at the Operation: Recall panel at JoeFest (Augusta GA this June 20-22). Please come see us, check out the Wave 1 prototypes and all 19 paintmaster 2ups, and pick up a set of Operation: Recall trading cards featuring all 20 Year One package paintings.

Wait, did I say 20?

Yes, yes I did. But let’s keep that last one a surprise for now.

Let’s ROLL!

Carson
