It’s the best time of the week, as it’s time to get our Saturday Morning Cartoon fix in!
This week, we’re diving in to the critically acclaimed Gargoyles cartoon! Gargoyles is a 1994 animated series that blends elements of fantasy, mythology, and urban drama. The story centers on a group of ancient, stone-skinned gargoyle warriors who protect their Scottish castle by day as stone statues, but come to life each night. Led by Goliath, their strong and wise leader, these gargoyles face betrayal in the 10th century, resulting in a spell that leaves them trapped in stone for a thousand years. Check it out –
In modern-day Manhattan, wealthy businessman David Xanatos breaks the spell, reviving the gargoyles in hopes of using their power for his own goals. However, the gargoyles quickly reject Xanatos’s manipulative schemes and instead dedicate themselves to protecting the city from threats both human and supernatural. Along the way, they encounter ancient enemies, mythical creatures, and modern-day villains, including Xanatos and other powerful adversaries. With the help of Elisa Maza, a fearless NYPD detective, Goliath and his clan struggle to find a new purpose while adapting to the challenges of modern society.
The show is notable for its dark tone, complex character arcs, and incorporation of Shakespearean themes and mythology, appealing to both young audiences and adults. It’s also the perfect example of not needing to speak down, or “dumb down” a show for a younger audience.
I absolutely love(d) Gargoyles! I hope you do too, or that you at least enjoyed this week’s session. See you back here next week for our next cartoon fix!
