Saturday Morning Cartoons Yo Joe June Edition – Arise Serpentor Arise

In honor of #yojoejune, we’re continuing our G.I.Joe-Centric Saturday Morning Cartoon session with an all time favorite mini series of mine (and I’m sure yours, too!)

This week, we’re going back to 1986 to check out the birth of the Cobra Emperor in Arise, Serpentor, Arise!

After yet another defeat inflicted by G.I. Joe, the immediate subordinates of Cobra’s leader, Cobra Commander, have finally come to the end of their patience with his apparent incompetence and his inability to achieve real victories. The leader of the research and interrogations wing, Dr. Mindbender, receives a dream showing the solution. His plan is to collect the genetic material of great warriors and military leaders to create a composite clone that would be the perfect leader for Cobra. Now they set out to put this scheme into motion, and G.I. Joe has very little time to learn of this plot before Cobra becomes that much more a dire threat to the world.

Hard to believe that it’s been almost 40 years since this first aired! No, I don’t feel old at all, really (lol)!

Serpentor has always been one of my favorite characters, as there’s just so much imagination put in to his backstory. The original ARAH toy was always a go to in my collection, just as the Classified version is now.

Enjoy your Saturday, my friends!

I feel like the Serpentor character had the potential to become a true villain for the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero franchise, yet that potential seemed to be squandered. The opening mini-series for the show’s second season was intriguing, though, especially with the introduction of new characters, especially Sgt. Slaughter.

I couldn’t agree more. It felt as though Serpentor was going to be “the” villain…and by the time DiC rolled around, he was just as comical as Cobra Commander in the Sunbow series.

It would be awesome if we could get a Serpentor on screen that matches his comic book persona.
