Saturday Morning Cartoons – Transformers The Movie

It’s the best time of the week! Time to kick back, relax and get ready to enjoy some classic animation…it’s time for Saturday Morning Cartoons!

This week, we’re checking out one of the greatest animated pieces to ever cause trauma for kids around the globe (lol). Get ready to transform and roll out, as we’re checking out 1986’s Transformers the Movie!

The Transformers: The Movie is a 1986 animated science fiction action film based on the Transformers television series. It is the first installment in the Transformers (Animated film series) and was released in North America on August 8, 1986, and in the United Kingdom on December 12, 1986. It was co-produced and directed by Nelson Shin, who also produced the television series. The screenplay was written by Ron Friedman, who created Bionic Six a year later.

The film features the voices of Eric Idle, Judd Nelson, Leonard Nimoy, Casey Kasem, Robert Stack, Lionel Stander, John Moschitta Jr., Scatman Crothers, Peter Cullen, Frank Welker, and Orson Welles, who died 10 months before the film’s release, in his final film role. The soundtrack comprises electronic music composed by Vince DiCola and songs from rock and heavy metal acts including Stan Bush and “Weird Al” Yankovic.

The story is set in 2005, 20 years after the TV series’ second season. After a Decepticon assault devastates Autobot City, Optimus Prime wins a deadly one-on-one duel with Megatron, but ultimately sustains fatal injuries in the encounter. With Megatron gravely injured, the Decepticons are forced to retreat, saving the Autobots. The Autobots are hunted across the galaxy by Unicron, a planet-sized Transformer intending to consume Cybertron and who transfigures Megatron to become the enslaved Galvatron.

Where were you when you saw Optimus die? Yikes, eh?

I was in a movie theater in the Bronx, NY with my best friend, Patrick and my Dad. When Optimus died, a collective “OH NO” was heard throughout the movie theater, followed by crying. Ah, good times had by all, amirite?

Interestingly enough, it was OP’s death that caused Duke to survive the G.I.Joe movie, changing his fatal snakebite to just a coma inducing flesh wound.

On that fun-filled note, I hope you enjoyed this week’s installment! Have a great Saturday ahead, my friends!

I was almost 10, and I went to see this for a friend’s birthday. We ate at Peter Piper Pizza right before and I remember that because they had a bangin’ mini arcade. I was a fan of Transformers then but G.I. Joe was my main focus. My friend whose birthday we were celebrating was a rabid Transformers fan. I can only imagine the shock and horror that went through his mind when Ironhide bought it (his favorite character). I was shocked not only at the bloodbath that unfolded, but the swearing included! I was a little sad when Optimus Prime died, but because I wasn’t as invested then, it didn’t hurt as much.

To me, this movie is a masterpiece and one of the best time capsules of the 80’s. I have owned the soundtrack for decades, and I just picked the 4K version of the movie. No piece of Transformers media can ever surpass this.
