Remember this past summer when rumor was that Robert Kirkman was working on a G.I.Joe vs Transformers cross over, incorporating the Energon Universe (G.I.Joe | Transformers | Void Rivals)?
Well speculate no more, my friends, as today, that rumor was confirmed as true. Big things are happening in the world of Skybound Entertainment and Hasbro. The two companies are teaming up for Energon Universe, a brand-new animated crossover series that will bring together Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Void Rivals in one massive, interconnected world.

The show has some serious creative power behind it — Lucifer’s Joe Henderson has signed on as writer and showrunner, while The Walking Dead and Invincible creator Robert Kirkman is helping steer the ship through his Skybound studio. The series is currently being shopped to streaming platforms and TV networks, so expect a bidding war to follow.
Unlike the kid-friendly versions of Transformers and G.I. Joe that dominated Saturday morning cartoons in the ‘80s, Energon Universe is being developed specifically for adults. Think Invincible energy — gritty storytelling, layered characters, and high-stakes action — not toy commercials with lasers. According to Deadline, the tone will mirror Kirkman’s signature style: bold, bloody, and surprisingly emotional.
This move marks a clear shift for Hasbro, which has been exploring ways to give its classic franchises a more mature edge while keeping its blockbuster films and toy lines aimed at younger audiences.
The Energon Universe first kicked off in 2023 with the comic Void Rivals, which stunned readers when Transformers’ Jetfire appeared in the first issue. That reveal opened the door to a shared continuity linking Transformers and G.I. Joe under one creative banner. The response has been huge — over seven million comics sold worldwide and glowing reviews across the board. Transformers even picked up two Edgar Awards in 2024.

With Henderson’s track record on Lucifer, White Collar, and Almost Human, fans can expect more than just cool fight scenes. The Energon Universe animated series is shaping up to deliver strong character arcs and serialized storytelling, all wrapped in a darker, more cinematic package.
There’s no word yet on where Energon Universe will land, but one thing’s for sure — this crossover is primed to be one of the biggest animated events in years. Autobots, Joes, and Rivals… roll out.
Stay tuned, I’ll bring you more on this story as it develops.
