Operation Recall Package Art and Paintmaster Updates

Incoming! There’s a new update from the Operation: Recall Kickstarter campaign to share that is absolutely chock full of AWESOME! Check it out –

Operation: Recall Army,

As I mentioned in Update #45, Doug Hart was working on package art for the last of the wave 3 figures. Well, he’s just shared his next masterpiece, Runback and PAC-DOG!

Runback + PAC-DOG by Doug Hart

As always, there is a collaborative process when creating package art. Below you see (1) reference photos I sent Doug, then (2) Doug’s first line art, then (3) my markup annotating figure clothing in green and (4) a 3D render of PAC-DOG for Doug to reference.

We sweat the details, as you can see!

One of the fun decisions Doug made was to roll the sleeping bag around toward the camera so its seam could look like a mouth below PAC-DOG’s eyes. Whether you notice these things subliminally or consciously, it makes a big difference!

Next up, wave 4!

While Doug is making his final touches on the wave 3 paintings, I’ve been pulling together his wave 4 package art kickoff packets. Here’s a look at that work.

On the top left corner of each of those, you’ll see Ed Morrill’s packaging layout sketch. Then you’ll see 3D renders of Mark Gerwig’s 3D modeled accessories, and finally you’ll see a packaging layout that composites photos of a highly articulated figure with 3D printed accessories, and more 3D accessory renders.

During this stage, I go back and forth with Ed Morrill to ensure I am capturing his vision for the layout, and oftentimes I offer alternative poses.

This is where YOU come in! We’re working on the last figure layout for now: General Mortífero (FYI, I’m skipping Scrounger while Luna is sculpted). We’ve got several great options, and I’d like your input on which moves forward into production. Let us know in the comments which pose you prefer, and why!

Other updates

(10) Dark Reapers, (11) Runback + PAC-DOG(12) SHHHH, (13) Clanker + Tank and (14) Sol Eagle are all cast and their paintmasters are in progress.

(15A) Night Raid and (16A) Scrounger were just cast, so those are next in line for paint.

(15B) Ozzie was recently sculpted and painted by Mark Gerwig (what can’t he do?!) and looks amazing! Next up he’s sculpting and painting (16B) Luna

(17) Cadavers just got a new head and new forearms in, so those will dropped off for casting with the next batch. (18) Damselfly is currently undergoing sculpt work, and (19) Snakeheads is next in line before casting.

BackerKit update

BackerKit will remain open until ALL paintmasters are complete. At that time, I’ll provide you all with updated scale master images (you can see the first nine in Update #45), and then you can lock in your selections before I close the BackerKit and tap that money for manufacturing these awesome figures! Sculpting is the main bottleneck, and we’ve got two figures left. At this rate, I’d say Spring ’25 is a realistic goal for closing the BackerKit.

An update on timing, and a plea for patience

We are looking at having figures in hand as early as next summer. They will come in waves of four, and you can opt to pay for intermittent shipping, or to hold until all are ready to save on shipping.

The initial Kickstarter goal of Dec. 2023 was estimated based on developing four new figures with the creative team, and manufacturing five (including Retelo, who had already been developed). We are now working to deliver 19 figures instead. That’s over 4X the development and manufacturing work. We are all working as quickly as possible to develop this line, while ensuring that the creators have an enjoyable experience. I’m not going to press folks needlessly, or cut corners to meet an arbitrary deadline. Development and manufacturing will take as long as it takes. I hope you all enjoy the creative process along the way!
