1988 was such an amazing year for the Transformers toy line, not only in North America, but in Japan as well. From the G1 Masterforce Cartoon, to Vintage Takara Toys, to Powermasters and Pretenders, the year was truly chock full of something for everyone.
Ken from Toy Kennections takes us on a deep dive of the year, while giving us a look at a few gems from his collection as well. Check it out –
Let’s have a look at the 1988 lineup of Transformers G1. Includes Powermaster Optimus Prime ( or God Ginrai if you prefer). And the other Powermasters, Pretenders, as well as Headmasters and Targetmasters.
Have a look at Decepticon / Destron Overlord and Black Zarak. Metalhawk and Grand Maximus. Lots of holy grails to look at here. Includes tons of the old Japanese exclusives.
I really loved all of the play features presented in 1988. I lived overseas at the time, so it was neat to see Japanese offerings “in the wild” as well. I still have one piece left over from that year, it’s my God Ginrai with Apex Armor. I love that toy!
Do you have any favorites from 1988? Sound off, I’d love to hear’em!
Many thanks as always to Ken for the deep dive!
