On behalf of SurveillancePort.com and its members, I’d like to wish you all a happy G.I.Joe Day!

What is G.I.Joe Day?

G.I. Joes were introduced on the market by Hasbro in February, 1964, created by Stanley Weston. Hasbro was hoping to recreate the success of their Barbie dolls with a similar toy for boys. At the time, people didn’t want their boys playing with “dolls” because dolls were girl toys.

G.I. Joe was first revealed to the world at the annual American International Toy Fair in New York on Feb. 9, 1964. Buyers from around the world jammed the showrooms, and they laughed at this square-jawed grunt-a ”government-issue” ordinary Joe-with his authentic uniforms and weapons and lifelike hair

Hasbro subsequently coined the term “action figure” to market their offering. The branding led to massive success, as is apparently by the longevity of the brand.

Hasbro, along with many other companies still use the term “Action Figure” today.

A Cartoon inspired by the toy, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero aired throughout the 80s and is, for all intents and purposes, what many members of our current community grew up with. Needless to say, both the G.I.Joe cartoon and comic book series by Marvel comics further cemented the toy in the American culture.

G.I. Joe has had a huge impact on the toy industry by inspiring so many of the
“Action Figures” that followed. Because of that, we salute G.I.Joe and thank him for his service!
