Go grab your favorite spot and get comfy, as it’s our first Saturday Morning Cartoon session of the new year! WOO HOO! Let’s get to it!
This week, we’re diving in to a fan favorite show
Ronin Warriors, known in Japan by its original title Legendary Armor Samurai Troopers (鎧伝サムライトルーパー, Yoroiden Samurai Torūpā), is a Japanese anime series created by Hajime Yatate and animated by Sunrise. The television series, co-produced by Nagoya TV, aired across Japan on the All-Nippon News Network from April 30, 1988, to March 4, 1989 for a total of 39 episodes. A manga adaptation was serialized on Kodansha’s Comic BomBom from November 17, 1988 to April 5, 1990 and the chapters collected into 2 tankōbon volumes.
Talpa, the demon lord of the Netherworld and ruler of The Dynasty, is bent on conquering the mortal world. Standing against Talpa and his four Dark Warlords are the five Ronin Warriors, each in possession of mystical armor and weapons. They are assisted by Mia Koji, a young student-teacher, and a mysterious warrior-monk known only as The Ancient.
I don’t know about you, but I absolutely loved this show as a kid.

I only remember seeing this during the summer of 1995, when I was taking a calculus class in college. The professor was Korean and we could barely understand him, which frustrated most of the class. I was a math nerd in high school and I was able to follow along. One of my classmates (who looked a lot like Scottie Pippen) brought this up show up one day. I hopped on the bus and headed home, eager to forget all about calculus. I only got to see it that summer, at 2:30 every day. So awesome, but very ephemeral.
One of Roku’s retro anime channels now shows it regularly. I have been watching it sporadically, and seeing it in the schedule sparked a feeling of euphoria. Roku is so underrated sometimes, but it has some serious chops when it comes to classic TV.

Wow, talk about coincidence – Around the same timeframe, I had what was known in NYC as a “tape spot”. It was a 12 x 12 space in the front of a retail store that I sold mixed tapes from various DJs out of. (yikes, what a different life that was).
The owner of the store in question was also Korean. He refused to speak a lick of English but eh, who cares, he was such a nice guy. I learned about Ronin Warriors through him. Had no idea they existed previously, but he was scooping them up for his nephew and had a few samples at the shop.
Being that they were toys, of course I fawned over them, oohing and aahing over their chrome. I hadn’t realized at the time that all of their bits combined to form other, shiner things…and not sure why that’s relevant here, so apologies, just a flood of nostalgia taking over my keystrokes.
Now, as for Roku, I couldn’t agree more. I’ve been able to introduce my littles to aaaaaaall sorts of deep cuts thanks to Roku. What I also appreciate is that I don’t have to pay for a movie that’s older than me. >.>
